Wilmington DPC Meeting - TOMORROW

As you know, DPC has been holding regional meetings throughout the state. So far, we have been to Medford, Quincy, Northampton, Worcester, Wrentham and Falmouth.  The last meeting scheduled before we break from these for the summer:

Tuesday, June 29, 2010, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Wilmington Public Library
175 Middlesex Avenue, Wilmington, MA

Wilmington is accessible by the Ride, and right off 93 (quick drive from Boston).  The Commuter Rail station is also nearby.

Pizza and refreshments at both!  ASL Interpreters.

Please join the Disability Policy Consortium, local Disability Commissions, community groups, DPC members, and others interested in learning more about advocacy, as we come together for an evening to share your ideas, your successes and your future!  Learn what works, what doesn't and how to improve access for all in your community!

Are you able to join us at either?  Please invite others.
DCR Responds Quickly on Beach Access

The DPC responded to a member's call on Wednesday that he and his service dog was denied access to a Department of Conservation and Recreation beach on the South Coast.  DPC staff places calls to a person in the Commissioners Office, the DCR ADA representative, and Tom McCarthy, Director of DCR's Universal Access Program.  We had return calls from all 3 people within 6 business hours.  By early afternoon our member in Wareham had received phone calls with apologies and an invitation to "come on down to the beach with his dog".

The moral of this story is not to call the DPC, but to tell the DCR at the park to call the DCR ADA Coordinator Agatha McGuire at 617 626-1250.  If that doesn't produce results, then call us.
Disability Advocates Texting Messages were Heard

The legislature is in the final stage of passing legislation regulating texting while driving, license renewal for drivers over 75 years, and provisions for health care providers to be protected if they notify the Registry of a person's inability to drive.  The original language required the Registry to immediately suspend the person's license.  The Conference Committee bill changed that to give the Registry 30 days to investigate the allegation of being unable to drive.
FMAP Funding Update

Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid withdrew the Job Extenders Bill that the FMAP funding was attached to, but Senate Democrats expect to take it up after July 4. This does not bode well for FMAP's passage, but we remain hopeful that Sen. Brown will realize how critical these funds are to thousands of individuals and families that he represents.
