Disability Policy Consortium Action Alert

July 13, 2010

Greetings,

Again, thank you so much for all of your support in the Chase Community Giving Contest.  Although we did not place in the Top 200, we were not far behind!  We ended in place 229 with a total of 1,007 votes!  Remember, we competed against 500,000 other organizations.  That is AMAZING and shows our STRENGTH!!

Below are two important notices. One concerning impending changes to CommonHealth and the other is a call to action.

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Robyn Powell

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT COMMONHEALTH

Last week, CommonHealth members who do not have other insurances received a letter notifying them that they are required to enroll in a Masshealth managed care plan (MCO) within a two week period; otherwise, they will be auto-enrolled in one of the plans. (You will be able to later change this enrollment but better to know in advance where your care will be). There are approximately 1880 members who will be affected.  Many of those affected will have a disability so we are trying to get the word out in case individuals may require assistance in evaluating plans.

We encourage most people to consider enrolling in the PCC plan (Primary Care Clinician plan) where you can choose a primary care clinician who accepts CommonHealth.  This may make it easier to keep the specialists you presently have as a doctor.  Don't hesitate to call MassHealth Customer Service at 1-800-841-2900 (TTY: 1-800-497-4648) between 8 A.M. and 5 P.M., Monday through Friday.  You have 2 weeks to enroll.   Check to see if your doctor or nurse practitioner can be your PCC or find out how you can identify a PCC who will help you maintain your present services.

MCOs available statewide with some exceptions: Boston Medical Center HealthNet Plan (not on Vineyard and Nantucket), Neighborhood Health Plan and Network Health (limitations in W. Mass.)   Fallon is available in Central Mass and Health New England is available in Western Mass.

CONTACT THE GOVERNOR TODAY!

As many of you know, on July 26 citizens with disabilities from across the commonwealth will be gathering on Boston Common to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ADA. We have invited Governor Patrick to attend and to date have not had a positive response from his office. Today we are asking all of our partners to contact his office and request his presence at the event. As a champion of civil rights it is important that we have him at this event.

Please contact his scheduling office at 617-725-4000 or via email at
governor.schedule@state.ma.us.

His mailing address is:

Dear Governor Patrick;

On Monday July 26, 2010 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm, the Disability Policy Consortium will be participating in our state's 20th anniversary celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), on the Boston Common.  We would like to invite you to attend along with us. As you know, the ADA is one of the most significant pieces of civil rights legislation ever passed. Many members of the disability community look at this as our Independence Day.

This is one of the few times of the year when we, as persons with disabilities, take a few minutes out and celebrate not only who we are, but what we have accomplished together. This year, over 1,000 individuals from around the state will participate in this event, making it the largest cross-disability gathering in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

We look forward to your participation.
