Disability Policy Consortium (DPC) – Board Member Job Description 

About DPC 

For nearly 30 years, the Disability Policy Consortium (DPC) has fought for the rights of people with disabilities across Massachusetts. We are an organization run by and for people with disabilities, proving every day what our community can accomplish when we are allowed to reach our full potential. 

DPC advances disability rights through four core programs: advocacy and community organizing, community-based research, training and consulting, and the My Ombudsman program. While progress has been made since the passage of the ADA, too many people with disabilities still face barriers to housing, employment, health care, transportation, and freedom of choice. Guided by our credo — “About Us, By Us” — we are committed to ensuring that disability rights are defined and advanced by those who live them. 

We believe that many gains have been made, but we know there is still a great deal of work to do. Too many members of our community are forced to live in nursing homes and institutions, or on the street. Too many are victims of violence, hatred, or abuse because of their disability. Too many experience discrimination that denies access to housing, employment, and opportunity. Our basic rights to privacy, dignity, and choice are still too often denied. Until every member of our community is free, DPC will keep fighting. 

Role of the Board 

DPC’s Board of Directors provides governance, oversight, and strategic guidance to advance our mission. As a board member, you will help shape the future of disability rights in Massachusetts and beyond by ensuring our organization remains strong, sustainable, and led by the disability community. 

Responsibilities & Expectations 

Terms are 2 years, generally with a 3-term limit. Board members are expected to: 

  • Attend quarterly board meetings and actively participate in discussions and decision-making. 

  • Join and contribute to at least one committee, such as the Development Committee or Advocacy Committee, which meet more regularly. 

  • Make a yearly personal contribution that’s meaningful to you to support the sustainability of DPC. 

  • Support fundraising and development efforts by helping identify potential donors, cultivating relationships, and/or assisting with fundraising events. 

  • Serve as an ambassador for DPC, representing the organization in your networks and helping expand our visibility and impact. 

  • Stay current on disability policy issues and DPC initiatives to provide informed input and contribute to strategic discussions. 

  • Uphold fiduciary and governance responsibilities to ensure the organization’s accountability and long-term health. 

  • Bring your expertise and lived experience to support DPC’s mission and strengthen our organizational capacity. 

What We’re Looking For 

We strongly encourage people with disabilities to apply, while recognizing that having a disability is not a requirement to serve on our board. We also welcome applicants with a strong connection to Massachusetts, though residency in the state is not required. Above all, we invite applications from all who share our commitment to equity and justice. We are especially seeking candidates who can bring one or more of the following: 

  • Fundraising skills or networks to help strengthen DPC’s sustainability. 

  • Financial management expertise, particularly experience with nonprofit budgets, accounting, or oversight. 

  • Experience with/commitment to disability rights and equity, and the belief that the disability community must lead the work that impacts our lives. 

  • Strategic insight and planning ability to help guide DPC’s direction and growth. 

  • Prior service on nonprofit boards and familiarity with effective governance practices.
